The people at both Oshkosh and the Society who participated in this program deserve great praise for their commitment to developing a new way to provide an old form of information access that is essential to our investment marketplace.

The Forum invited Oshkosh to pioneer this direct access based on the professionalism of their investor relations team to guide our planning, as well as for the suitability of their company as an initial example that professional analysts could examine to understand how a business can be managed to generate sustainable returns on capital used to produce things that society needs. I hope that this event will now provide some recognition for the Oshkosh example of doing the right things the right way, and that this will add to the well-deserved pride that guides everything they do.

For the CFA Society, this investor access to the corporate managers who use our capital is exactly what the Society was founded for, and why it became the world’s most important association of investment professionals. The adaptation of this needed marketplace function to our current communication processes was the result of extraordinary efforts and admirable dedication of the Society’s staff, as well as Leo Schmidt and his fellow volunteer members of the Society’s Institutional Asset Management Group. I hope all of the Society’s members, and the whole marketplace, will appreciate their efforts as much as I do.

Direct Access events are organized by the Shareholder Forum to provide effective examinations of investor interests in a subject company, according to the objectives defined in the Forum's public interest  program for "Fair Investor Access." The program for public presentations of these events, including their identification and professional analysis of investment issues, has been defined to support the mission of the hosting CFA Society New York, which had co-founded the Forum in 1999 to provide the required SEC-defined independent moderator functions for its pioneering programs that became known as "corporate access" events.

Communications for the planning of a Direct Access event are conducted according to the Forum's posted Conditions of Participation to provide both investor and corporate decision-makers with access to information and a free exchange of views relating to their interests. Each participant is expected to make independent use of information obtained through the Forum, subject to the privacy rights of other participants, and it is a Forum rule that participants will not be identified or quoted without their explicit permission.
