Crowley Maritime Corp. said it recently concluded a transaction which made possible a $2 million dollar donation to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation at Kings Point, N.Y., the largest in the history of the academy.

As a result of this donation, the academy has founded a Logistics and Intermodal Chair in the name of Thomas B. Crowley, Sr., former chief executive of the company who died in 1994. The company is now run by his son, Tom Crowley, Jr., who is chairman, president and chief executive.

"We are proud to be a part of the Academy's Logistics and Intermodal department, said Tom Crowley, in a statement. "Some of Crowley's finest employees have their roots with the academy and we are happy give back in a way that will continue to develop maritime leaders."

The chair is expected to help attract scholars and practitioners to the academy for involvement with logistics and intermodal transportation education, research and service. They will also engage in research, attract funding and applied research opportunities for faculty and students, guide the midshipmen in their career and internship opportunities, help organize conferences and seminars, provide consulting services to the industry and advise the faculty on further expansion of the program.

"We appreciate Crowley's involvement with the academy," said Gene McCormick, President, USMMA Alumni Foundation. "With this donation, we will be able to expand our Logistics and Intermodal programs while providing students with real world experiences and hands on research through the Crowley Chair."

The occupant of the Chair is chosen by a panel consisting of the head of the Department of Marine Transportation, the Director of the Logistics and Intermodal Transportation Program, two faculty members and the dean.

Crowley. Based in Oakland, Calif., provides worldwide logistics, liner services, contract towing and transportation, energy support services, ship assist and escort services, and vessel management and petroleum and chemical marine transport.
