DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

The Securities and Exchange Commission disclosed that on Friday it declared effective a registration of 32 million shares of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. for issuance under the company's proposed merger with Bear Stearns & Cos. (BSC).

The SEC staff reviews registration statements and declares them "effective" if filers satisfy the agency's disclosure rules.

J.P. Morgan agreed to acquire Bear Stearns last month in an all-stock deal valued, at Friday's closing price, at $10.40 a share.
